This two-day weekend course provides a complete introduction to black & white analogue photography, covering film shooting, developing, and darkroom printing. Itโ€™s ideal for complete beginners or anyone looking for a clear, practical refresher.

In a small group of six, youโ€™ll gain hands-on experience using a 35mm film SLR camera, developing your own film, and producing darkroom prints by hand.

The venue is based in Greenock, with free parking available.

It is a short walk from Greenock Central Station, with regular local bus services stopping nearby.


What youโ€™ll learn

Day 1 โ€“ Shooting & Film Developing

  • How a 35mm SLR camera works
  • Understanding shutter speeds/aperture and their creative effects
  • Setting correct exposure using the cameraโ€™s light meter
  • Film ISO explained and how to load film
  • Practical shooting in the local area using a 24-exposure film roll
  • Introduction to film processing equipment
  • How to load and develop black & white film

Day 2 โ€“ Darkroom Printing

  • Introduction to the darkroom environment, including enlargers and chemistry
  • Health & safety guidance for working in the darkroom
  • Making black & white enlargements from negatives (up to 10″ ร— 8″)

Whatโ€™s included

  • One roll of black & white 35mm film
  • All chemistry and photographic paper for developing and printing

Equipment

  • Cameras can be provided, or you are welcome to bring your own 35mm SLR camera
  • Please bring your developed black & white negatives for the printing session
